Muscles and Emotions

Have you ever thought about muscles and emotions?

The emotions we experience and hold onto can have a very real physical impact on our bodies.

Relating Muscles and Emotions

I have studied Applied Kinesiology as taught by the International College of Applied Kinesiology.

This system relates the neuromuscular function to the structural, chemical and neurological regulatory mechanisms. Which, simply put, relates the function of your muscles to structural balance (the physical functioning of your body, the skeletal and muscular systems), chemical balance (allergies, toxins, nutrition) and the mental / emotional.

Using this wonderful tool it is possible to determine the reason why a particular muscle is not able to function to its best.

Old or new?

Current issues: The emotions involved in the reduced function of muscles may be current stress and tensions in our lives. From dis-harmony in the home, workplace issues, a recent injury or traumatic event.

Past events: The body can hold on to the emotions when we have a traumatic event in our lives. I have had many clients with PTSD, with childhood trauma, physical and sexual abuse, previous violent relationships and major accidents / injuries. They may have had counselling and managed to package up the event, learn coping strategies and be functioning well in life. However, their body continues to tell the story of the emotions that are trapped.

Past lives: It is said we also carry the emotional memories of events in past lives. This has been the issue that has come up for quite a number of my clients.

Let’s consider back and hip pain.

If the main supporting muscles are not able to function correctly you are prone to injury, pain, stiffness and tension. You could liken your body to a tent.. where the guide ropes are all out of whack, one too tight, another to loose.. the tent will become crooked, and out of shape, and may even collapse.

This is basically what happens to your body; it becomes crooked and out of line, is prone to injury where the spine and joints are not supported, and to muscle tension, spasm and pain.

Here are some examples of particular muscles and emotions that affect them.

Fear, anxiety, shock, trauma

These all relate to the kidney meridian / energy line.

They will ultimately affect the psoas muscle, the big core muscle that connects the lower (lumbar) back to the thigh bone (femur), or the tenderloin in a  beef cow. Tension and weakness here will create tightness and possible pain in your low back and leave you prone to injury.

Loss, sadness, loneliness, grief

These relate to the large intestine meridian, and as such will affect the following muscles:

Hamstrings, the muscles down the back of your leg, from your pelvis (butt) to your knee

Quadratus lumborum connects your lower (lumbar) back and bottom rib to the top of your pelvis.

All of these support the back, the hips and the knees.

Insecurity, betrayal, abandonment, lost, vulnerable

These affect the heart, and the pericardium meridian, along with the small intestine, and are associated with the biggest muscle group in the body, the gluteals, our butt muscles.

And with the Quadriceps, the big muscle group down the front of your thigh.

It is clear that they have a big role to play in supporting us in an upright position.

This is just a sample of the emotions and the muscles that can be affected. There are other, powerful emotions which I have not considered here, including guilt, shame, anger etc. Come see me today and find out more.

How do we deal with these emotions?

We do not need to know where these emotions come from, only to acknowledge them and to work to release them, replacing them with those more positive.

This can be done through Energy healing, Reiki or or a number of other emotional release techniques such as tapping. Hypnotherapy, talk therapy or counselling may also be helpful, however, it is not always as effective in releasing emotions stuck in the body.

Emotions-and-Tight-Hips-Wolf-Healing-Ottawa

Emotions and tight hips.

Have you ever considered that your physical body carries the emotions that we experience? And that those emotions can affect the way we move? In this blog I want to consider our emotions and tight hips.

It is well known by those who teach and practice yoga that performing hip opening postures and movements can cause us to become emotional, even bringing tears. Most of us do not understand why, or readily associate the tightness and tension in our body with trapped emotions. The medical profession may attribute it to inflammation, injuries, repetitive strain, too much sitting or even “just getting older”.. They are only just beginning to look at the association between the physical body and the emotions / energetic.

Of course these reasons are all valid possibilities, and should be considered as part of the picture, however, I often find that releasing trapped emotions brings more relief and more improvement in flexibility, strength and function than any amount of pills, exercise, massage or even physical treatments.

The Root or 1st Chakra

Our root chakra is located at the base of spine. It is the first one to become activated when we are born and is associated with particular aspects of our wellbeing. The new baby requires the first 4 of these things from the time of birth and will go on to develop the fifth:

  • Security, safety, survival
  • Basic needs (food, sleep, shelter, self-preservation, etc.)
  • Grounding
  • Support and foundation for living our lives
  • Physicality, physical identity and aspects of self

The Sacral or 2nd Chakra

This is located in the lower abdomen, about 3 inches below our belly button or navel.

In the Western world this chakra is commonly referred to as being to do with sex and sexuality, however, it is far more than that… It has to do with gratification, sensuality, pleasure of all types and creativity. It has to with the enjoyment of life, freedom from worry, the ability to be spontaneous and have fun.

Emotions and Tight Hips

Any situations or events that cause emotions that counter these qualities will bring a blockage in our energy and affect our physical body. In particular anxiety, fear, trauma, not feeling safe and secure will cause the root to become locked tight as a protection. Many clients I meet are stuck tight in their root chakra and, as a part of this, they have deficient energy in their 2nd chakra. It is hard to be spontaneous, joyful, creative and full of fun when we are full of fear!

The effect is cumulative and repeated events will add up, in addition the more intense the event the more the fear locks the hips tight. Combine this with genetic memories kindly passed to us from parents, grandparents and other ancestors and those experiences from past lives and we often have an excess of stored up emotional baggage.

I have had many clients with PTSD, and who suffered childhood abuse and assaults and a number traumas.

I will often ask them “How do your hips feel, do you find they are tight and restricted?”

The answer is always “Yes”, and usually accompanied by “How did you know that…??”

My answer will be “More often than not, there is a link between your emotions and tight hips!”

Releasing the emotions

The are many ways to do this, and each one of us requires a different combination of approaches, there is never a one size fits all.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

For some, working with the conscious mind through counselling, psychotherapy and talk therapy is enough. However, it is more common that this brings the ability get on with life, to function, and to even be successful but does not release the emotions form the body. I liken it to taking the events and traumas, packaging them up, then sticking the boxes in the closet. They are out of immediate sight so do not impact our everyday life, but they are sitting there festering and will most likely come back to haunt us at some point in our lives..

Hypnotherapy

This works more with the subconscious. It allows us to let go of the rational and access our inner wisdom. Through hypnotherapy we can begin to take out those boxes of emotional garbage and throw them out. There is a “blind” approach where it is not necessary to open those boxes and relive the events, but simply to acknowledge the emotions involved and to throw them out.

Energy Healing and Reiki

A good healer will facilitate the release of emotions from your body. Using either light hands on, or using their hands in the energetic field of the body, they will create a safe space for the body to work through the emotions. They will bring energy in where required, assist with the flow and unblocking of energy end emotions and take and dispose of anything you are ready to release.

CranioSacral Therapy

This is a very subtle, hands on technique that works with both the physical and energetic aspects of our being. A good CranioSacral Therapist will be able to feel those trapped emotions and will work with your body to release them. It is not unusual for people to experience emotions during a treatment as things are released.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or Tapping

The Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is very easy to learn and can be used at home. It is a form of psychological acupressure, simple tapping is used on certain points while thinking about the traumatic event, pain or negative emotions, along with the voicing of positive affirmations. This works to clear the emotional blockages.

Yoga

Another technique you can use on your own at home as well as in a class or with an instructor. Performing specific hip opening exercises can teach the body that it can let go of the tensions along with the emotions that are behind them.

Clinical Somatic Therapy or Education

This gentle approach works to teach the body to go beyond the restrictions imposed by the emotional baggage it carries. Slow, conscious movements are used with the help of a therapist using hands on techniques. Exercises are provided to be done at home to continue the healing journey. In the process of learning to let go of the restrictions it also lets go of the emotions.

Conclusion

Emotions and tight hips: the body holds onto the emotions that we experience, causing very real physical symptoms. Most people will choose a number of different techniques and approaches over time to release these emotions, some starting from the physical and some form the emotional / energetic angle. Whatever techniques you choose to release the emotions and to unlock your hips it is a journey that cannot be rushed. Enjoy it and be curious about the process.

Emotions Affect Your baby Wolf Healing Ottawa

Pregnancy: How Emotions Affect Your baby

There is a lot of information available about the physical aspects of pregnancy, but how often do we consider the emotional changes, and, maybe more importantly, the ways that these emotions affect your baby.

It is normal for you to experience a wide range of emotions during pregnancy and post partum.

There may be highs and lows, anxiety, fear, excitement and a lack of confidence that you will be a good mother.

These are triggered in part by hormonal changes in your body. Some women are particularly sensitive to the increase in progesterone which can cause irritability.

In addition, pregnancy can highlight relationship challenges, insecurities and unrealistic expectations. It will also bring up issues from your own childhood and possibly issues that you picked up from your own parents during your gestation and early years.

There can be stresses such as what will the baby mean for life going forward, how will it impact your relationship with your partner and what will the financial implications be.

All of these emotions affect your baby..

So how do your emotions affect your baby?

Children are like emotional sponges. They pick up on the emotions of the adults in their life, especially those closest to them. They will sense these emotions even in the womb, and some children will hold onto these emotions, especially when the emotions are strong.

It is therefore important for the well being of both yourself and your child to resolve these emotions.

That does not mean repress them; in fact it means the opposite!

Find someone you can talk to, work through any issues you may have with other family members or your partner, express yourself. It is also best to try to avoid situations which you will find emotive.

Ideally you should seek to deal with any of your own emotional issues prior to getting pregnant. This can be emotions experienced during your life, or associated with your genes, so your parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on. Clearing emotions prior to trying to get pregnant will increase the chances of being successful and ensure the best of health for both mom and baby.

Many of us have some sort of emotional trauma in our lives.

Case Study

I want to introduce you to “Josh”

Josh’s parents brought him to me when he was nearly 3 years old. They were seeking to address his ‘allergies’. He had suffered eczema and asthma from the time he was born, in addition to which, he was frequently sick and any small virus would end up in bronchitis.

When talking to his parents I was told that his mom had a very stressful time during pregnancy.

She had suddenly lost her brother, with whom she was very close. She was also told during the pregnancy, incorrectly as it turned out, that Josh was in fact a Down’s syndrome baby. As you can imagine, this caused her to experience intense emotional turmoil.

Every organ in the body is associated with a set of emotions.

In the case of the lungs these emotions are grief, loss, loneliness, sadness, all of which Josh’s mom had experienced very intensely during the pregnancy. This meant that Josh’s ‘allergies’ had an emotional root.

We used a combination of Reiki, Energy Healing and Natural Allergy Therapy to release these emotions from both Josh and his mom.

His asthma and eczema improved dramatically; he no longer needs his asthma medications and can get sick without developing bronchitis.

This really highlights how emotions affect your baby, and the importance of addressing the emotional issues of the people around a child, both during pregnancy and following birth.

Can't Lose Weight Wolf Healing Ottawa

Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Stress and Emotional Triggers

Do you struggle to lose weight?

We all know about emotional eating, the need to eat for comfort, or if we are sad or angry.

But did you know it often goes deeper than that? There has been a lot of research into why we over eat, and why people are often unable to lose weight, or having lost the weight it goes straight back on.

When dealing with immediate emotions such as being dumped by a partner, falling out with a friend, being bullied or having issues with our boss it is obvious that we are comfort eating. However, there often deeper reasons.

Emptiness and missing aspects to our lives

Often people who are lonely, or who feel unloved, unsupported or undervalued will find it impossible to lose weight. Their eating fills a void. It is unfortunate that the foods usually craved are the feel good foods, the ones that generate feelings of pleasure. This usually involves sugar and fat. In addition, cakes, muffins, cookies, pasta, pizza are all made from wheat, which contains gliadin, an opiate which binds to the opiate receptors in the brain and triggers excessive appetite.

Read HERE for more info on opiates in wheat.

It becomes difficult to function without these feel good foods as we experience withdrawal, in addition to which the void in our lives is not fulfilled.

Primitive, Instinctive Reaction to Stresses

Our primitive, reptilian or instinctive brain can feel our daily stress and tries to interpret the cause. It can associate the stress with physical dangers, famine or threat from the elements such as winter cold. To deal with the perceived threat of hunger or cold it will respond by slowing the metabolism and increasing appetite leading to fat storage. The extra fat would have been essential for the survival of our ancestors.

Solutions

In light of the above, it becomes apparent that we need to resolve these past traumas and emotional stresses in order to lose weight and keep it off.

So, how can you do this?

Mindfulness

Bringing an awareness to your emotions is a great start. Acknowledge what triggers you and work to let it go. Look for areas of stress in your life and make changes to address that stress, or at least put in place a plan to make the necessary changes, whether it is a change of job, to resolve relationship issues or release past traumas. Having a light at the end of the tunnel can be very beneficial.

Seek Help

There are a number of therapies and healing modalities that can help. It is important to be sure that you feel really comfortable and can connect with the person you choose. Some therapists and healers offer a free introductory session, a chance to meet before committing to a full session. This is a great idea as there is nothing worse than starting a session and 5 minutes in you are sitting there thinking I don’t want to be here!!.

Having a team of people to help is also a good idea, drawing on whichever approach is needed at the time. You may see one person for a while then someone else, then maybe go back to the first, each assisting you with a specific issue.

You may want to consider the following:

Talk therapies such as:

  •  Counselling and Psychotherapy
  •  Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
  •  Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)

Energetic work, including:

In summary

However you decide to deal with your stresses and emotional issues or traumas, remember that this a process, not a one session instant fix. The process can be difficult as you work to bring changes to your life, release your emotions and stresses, and reprogram long standing habits and beliefs.

Stick with it and you will ultimately become less reactive, happier, more whole and most importantly be able to lose weight and keep it off!

Reiki for Fertility - Wolf Healing Ottawa

Reiki for Fertility

There is nothing more upsetting for a couple who have decided it is time to start a family than to experience difficulty conceiving and carrying a baby to full term.

The hormones involved in the reproductive system of both men and women are very finely balanced. Any disruption in our health, whether physical, emotional or energetic will impact this fine balance. It is therefore important to consider the mind / body connection. This is where Reiki for fertility comes in.

Reiki is known to be useful for pain management, stress reduction, improved sleep and energy levels, recovery from injury and surgery, and for symptom control. It can be used alongside other fertility treatments and is beneficial for those trying to conceive naturally. It helps to balance our immune system, our endocrine system and assisting the function of our organs.

The Importance of the Root and Naval Chakras

The body is believed to have seven main centres of energy, the chakras. The ones most important to reproduction are the Root chakra (Muladhara) and Navel chakra (Swadhisthana). These are located at the base of the pelvis and in our lower abdomen respectively.

There are many reasons why our energy can be disrupted: stresses and traumas, our hectic and demanding lifestyle, negative thought patterns, toxins in the environment / medications / foods (such as preservatives and pesticides) and hormones in meats and milk etc.

In particular, I see many clients with past trauma from childhood events and / past relationships, or carrying trauma from their parents (genetic memories) and past lives. It may be sexual, physical or emotional abuse or simply being told that nothing is ever good enough and a lack of self esteem. With Reiki it is not necessary to know where this trauma originates, or to go and re-live any events. It is enough to simply acknowledge the emotions held within the body, to work to release them and to bring better balance and harmony.

In my experience, trauma will often lead to the closing or blocking of the Root and Naval chakras. This is a type of protection, a hanging on or closing down.

In this case clients of both sexes will often experience:

  • Stiffness in their hips
  • Lower back pain or pain down their leags
  • Digestive concerns
  • Reproductive issues

In addition, men may experience:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low libido
  • Inability to ejaculate
  • Changes in sperm quality / quantity

And women complain of:

  • Irregular or painful menses
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome
  • Pain and itching / bleeding with intercourse
  • Low libido

In my practice I have also seen many women with with cancer; of the uterus / endometrium / ovaries / breast, and in every case there was some sort of emotional trauma or abuse in their history.

Stress and Fertility

It is widely recognised that stress plays a big part in fertility. There are many Studies that link elevated stress hormones with difficulty conceiving and experiencing a successful pregnancy.

In addition to releasing trapped emotions and trauma, a Reiki session will bring deep relaxation, a letting go of everyday stresses, it calms the nervous system allowing for regeneration and healing to take place. By releasing and resolving trauma it also allows the body to function at a much more optimal level, and for the person to become less reactive to events in everyday life.

Reiki for Fertility

In conclusion: Reiki works to rebalance your body, to release trauma that is stored within the body and to relieve stress.  It assists in the optimal functioning of the whole body, including the endocrine system and organs.

Reiki for fertility will never guarantee that you have a successful pregnancy, but it can certainly go a long way towards preparing you physically and emotionally, and give you the best chance possible. Of course, in some cases, there is a physical or structural concern that can only be addressed using Western medicine.

You may wish to experience Reiki for fertility before undergoing more invasive and disruptive treatment.
